My Second First Mother’s Day
This was my first Mother’s Day I’ve ever spent with a full family. Previously on mother’s day, I laid around the house, or my step dad took my mom, myself and the kids to breakfast. One year, I think all the women in my family had a brunch, but I believe I had to work. Every year, like clockwork, I received a beautiful bouquet of flowers, delivered with a thoughtful message, thanking me for raising my children.
Four years ago, on my first Mother’s Day, my mom came to visit me and the twins. I finally had an overnight sitter, and spent the Saturday evening before dancing the night away with my fabulous post baby shape. On Sunday, when I arrived back to my country home, I received a dozen of the most gorgeous pink roses. I said earlier that every year I received a bouquet, but this first year was by far the most beautiful. Pink is my favorite color, and even though I usually hate babies breathe, they complimented the hue of the roses beautifully. I also got a card with a sweet message inside…
“Cara, Our Star crossed paths have seemed to create a family for us. Even though we would have never thought we would be down this path, I’m grateful to say that I have a partner like you…I wouldn’t trade you or the twins for the world…you’re the best mom this side of the Mason Dixon…the best since [his mother’s full name] got her start in 1985…You Ms. Lady are a phenomenal mom…and I know you’ll continue to be a great example for Ella! –Mr. Phantastic” (Yes. 4th Roommate referred to himself as such for a few good years…I blame Alpha Phi Alpha.)
This year though, from the moment I woke up, until now, when I am sitting in bed writing this, I have been waited on hand and foot by 4th Roommate and the kids. They made me a great breakfast, a quick lunch…the kids didn’t even give me too much grief when I went to leave the house to go run the trail at our local park. Currently, while I lounge in our king sized bed, watching the Law & Order SVU marathon on USA, I smell tilapia and hibachi rice (which is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE) cooking. If I could map out a perfect day, this would be it. I used to be so happy that I shared these twins with a great guy who thought enough of me on Mother’s Day to call, send flowers and a card…and that really was amazing at the time, but I wouldn’t go back or trade this for the world. Instead of flowers and a nice card, I have companionship. Instead of pictures in a digital album, I have memories. Instead of hanging with the girls or an extended member of my family, I am lounging in my own place, with my own family. Even though four years ago was my first mother’s day, today still feels pretty special. Oh…and this year, the flowers were replaced with NEW COUCHES. Total upgrade
Happy Mother’s Day to all the new moms, single moms, married moms, old moms, young moms and every other kind of mom in between. If you have a moment, please share your favorite Mother’s Day memories with me, or the special things that happened to you on this Mother’s Day! I hope your day was as special as mine. And my hibachi rice was delicious!

Awwww Cara that was the bomb!
Thanks Sara…and Happy Belated Mother’s Day to you!
Wow that sounds like an amazing Mothers Day!!
My best Mothers Day by far was this one! I was home we didnt dress up or go out or anything. I had my twins (5), my niece/god daughter (1.5), my nephew (4) and my goddaughter (4) for the whole weekend! It was heavenly to have all the kids although my poor husband was fit to be tied by Saturday afternoon. We ate manwich and cheetos, cookies, went to the park and rode bikes and giggled and laughed and just enjoyed each other. Between work, grad school, my husbands coaching schedule, his grad school schedule and life with twins period, I rarely get all the kids together at one time. I want them all to have a close relationship like I have with my siblings, cousins and god siblings. I received the most amazing handmade cards, homemade bath salts, and one on one time with each of them. The cards and all that was nice but the love, hugs and kisses were the absolute best. Best Mothers Day/Weekend by far!!
Kisha, what a GREAT day! First…omg you are a Goddess among Mothers for managing that many children under the roof in ONE weekend. Second, it must have been amazing to have all those little hugs and kisses. I can imagine the feeling. I totally agree, going out and being wined and dined previously was nice, but being home and celebrating with family was by far the best! i am glad you had a great day! …and still really amazed that you handled all those little ones! You’re awesome!
Kisha & Cara you both are so blessed and sounds like you both had amazing weekends! I’ve been a mom for a hot min (my oldest is 24) but this was the 1st mothers day that I didn’t go spend the day with my mom & grandmother, normally I would go out of guilt but this weekend I decided that although I LOVE my mom and grandmother, I have my own family and I’ve earned the right to lounge around the house and do nothing if I wanted to and that’s exactly what I did. I woke up and my oldest who had the work was thoughtful enough to leave me a gorgeous bouquet of yellow tulips and a card. I spent the day in my pj’s in bed catching up on my dvr’d programs and sipping wine, after a nap I woke up and my kids had made me dinner. I ate with them, chatted a bit, watched more tv and then went to bed, woke up this morning and they had even cleaned the kitchen, not half cleaned like they normally do and I have to go behind and re-clean but cleaned and even mopped the floor! That in itself was a treat cuz it only happens if I ask or do it myself (mothers of boys understand me on the cleaning tip!). I woke up feeling refreshed and happy and that’s what it’s all about!
Thanks for reading! You had a great Mother’s Day too! Full of relaxation which is totally what its all about. I can also super relate to the kitchen thing. If anyone cleans it other than me, I usually have to go behind them and do it right lol…so its nice that they did it YOUR way. And super nice that they mopped, cuz i definitely woke up this morning and mopped my own kitchen floor LOL
This is my first time reading your blog but i must say the title is way off from your posts lol. I am truly happy for my children they are the lights of my life and i will continue to enjoy there face until GOD takes me off this earth. However, whenever i do find a man that can accept my children and i and we enjoy holidays like this i will be elated. Until i will live vicariously through all the blessed moms who have both! i wish you guys the best!!!!
Love,
Barbara (mom of 2)
Barbara! Thanks for reading! I am glad you didn’t judge the book by its cover and kept going! Happy Belated Mother’s Day to you. I definitely used to be a single mom, so I know that holidays like Mother’s Day can be hard when you are the one making the construction paper cards for yourself with your own kids…but being a mom is so rewarding, so we push through! Thank you for the well wishes!
How sweet! Your family is beautiful. I want to pinch those kids right through the computer. Beautiful babies.
I’m so happy for you guys!!
