Divorced Dad here, and, though I enjoyed your blog, I have to agree with your husband. (And why do you keep calling him your "Fourth Roommate", when, according to your own writing, he has made it possible for you to raise your kids the way you would like?)

I'm sad for you, sad that the concept of discussing biology makes your palms sweat.

Sex as a method of reproduction has existed on Earth for at least 600 million years; humans for around 2.5 million. We, our morals, our discomfort are latecomers to this.

Please don't misunderstand me: I'm not suggesting that you give young kids a step-by-step narrative of that night that led to their conception. Not at all.
Kids are curious, and even if you have to water it down, why not tell them the truth? What horrors do you imagine will ensue? Will they love you less? Will you love them less? Will they be harmed?

I recall something along these lines when my son was young, and I'm pretty sure when the conversation got too personal, I simply stopped that part of the conversation with "that's private between me and mom, but when you're older, we can talk more about it". Just that part: we continued to talk about conception, generally, and the process.

Anyway, all the best

What I don't understand is why does it matter to you what anyone else does? You have your own family, two women or two men will not EVER affect your marriage so who cares? I feel like this is my biggest issue with people who feel the way you do. I think people should just mind their own business when it comes with telling people how they should live their life or if they should or shouldn't be able to marry someone.
Honestly there is so many more important issues the government should be taking care of than making a big deal about who is marrying who.
Any by bringing up a religion and saying a certain religion says it's wrong, well not everyone is that religion so why should they have to abide by those laws, that's not democracy.

This was the truest and funniest post I've read. A friend of mine has the "ratchet hoodchick" ring that is featured. I showed my white co-worker this post today and hid the title her first response: why would someone think that is acceptable? Who would wear that? Then i took her to my Friend's FB page and showed her the exact hoodrific ring, and she covered her mouth and went to her desk. I too, am an April baby and was taught early on about the 4C's and what to expect from a man. I'll be married 12 years in June and have upgraded twice; both the other rings were clear I/ G and one cut was marquis and the other square. My husband decided to upgrade me himself with a beautiful 1.5 carat round center with a 1/2 carat diamond band.

I think it's important to recognize that you are not really believers in what your religion teaches. You can see that Muslims and Jewish people and agnostics can all be good people, and that a loving and caring God would not commit these people to eternal suffering, simply for being born into a family that taught them a different faith. The same is true for homosexuals, who are simply pursuing their natural biological urges and the relationships that will make them truly fulfilled. I suspect you know this is true despite your faith making it hard to accept. Many broken marriages have resulted from people trying to conform to what they thought they were supposed to be, a person has to be true to themselves. People flee countries where anti-gay laws and bigotry spell possible death for openly gay individuals. This is not a "choice" and it is not taken lightly. It is often very difficult for these people to come to terms with who they are, especially if they grew up in an environment where this was demonized, this can be very detrimental to a persons self image. I don't want to challenge anyone's beliefs beyond asking you to consider that even mildly deprecating comments contribute to this very literal effect on people's health and well being. If you think marriage is between a man and a woman, than you are at liberty to practice it in just such a way. You're beliefs however are grounded in faith and not evidence and therefore do not justify the attack on another person's rights such as been seen by religious groups rallying against gay marriage. I repeat, this has very real consequences on the health and well being of good, HUMAN BEINGS. Please take a minute to read this attached article which demonstrates very well what I am referring to.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2096922/9-student-suicides-Michele-Bacmanns-Minnesota-linked-anti-gay-bullying.html . I implore you to please think about this before you publicly express your religious homophobia in the future, or before you impart it to your children, who may one day have the negative connotation thrust upon themselves as they come into adulthood and the realization of their own sexuality.

QUOTING A SCRIPTURE since you refuse.. Matthew 19:10-12

Jesus refers to "eunuchs who have been so from birth." This terminology ("born eunuchs") was used in the ancient world to refer to homosexual men. Jesus indicates that being a "born eunuch" is a gift from God.

Some Christians confidently assert that God did not create homosexual people "that way." This is important because they realize if God did create gays "that way," rejecting them would be tantamount to rejecting God’s work in creation. In pressing their “creation order” argument, some Christians are fond of saying, "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!" To bolster their position, they often cite Jesus’ words in Matthew 19:4-5, where he responds to a question about whether divorce is permissible:

“Jesus answered, ‘Have you not read that the One who made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh”? Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.’ ”

From these words, some Christians draw the conclusion that heterosexuality is the creation norm and, thus, heterosexual marriage is the only legitimate way for people to form romantic relationships. Ironically, Jesus’ own words in this very same passage refute these conclusions.

As the dialogue continues, Jesus’ disciples are disturbed by his strict teaching on divorce. The disciples say that if divorce is not a ready option, perhaps it would be best for a man not to marry a woman. Jesus responds:

“Not everyone can accept this teaching, but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone accept this who can.” (Matthew 19:11-12)

Here Jesus identifies three classes of men who should not marry women. Taking his categories in reverse order, first, there are those who have made themselves “eunuchs” for the kingdom of heaven, i.e., those who foreswear marriage to better serve God. Second, he mentions those who have been “made eunuchs by others,” an apparent reference to castrated males. But Jesus mentions a third category — eunuchs who were born that way. Some might argue that Jesus was referring to males born without testicles, but this would be extremely rare. Moreover, this interpretation ignores how the term “born eunuchs” was used in other literature of the time.

In the ancient world, including ancient Jewish culture (as reflected in the Talmud), “natural” or “born” eunuchs were not associated with missing testicles. Rather, they were associated with stereotypically effeminate characteristics and behavior (just like modern gay men), and were thought by Rabbi Eliezer to be subject to “cure” (just like modern gays). Moreover, as we have also seen, eunuchs were commonly associated with homosexual desire. (For a complete discussion of the term "born eunuch" and the connection with homosexuality, see The Early Church Welcomed a Gay Man.) As a reasonably informed person of his time, Jesus would have been aware of this common view of eunuchs. Yet he very matter-of-factly asserts that some people are simply born that way. The implication of his statement is profound — God created gay people the way they are! Jesus says so.

Unlike Rabbi Eliezer, Jesus feels no need to “cure” these born eunuchs. He speaks no words of condemnation. Rather he lists people born gay alongside another honored class (eunuchs for the kingdom), and accepts them as a natural part of God’s creation order.

Thus, when Matthew 19 is read as a whole, we see Jesus teaches that most people are created for heterosexual marriage. (We too accept this as God’s predominant creation paradigm.) But, unlike some modern Christians, Jesus does not see this as the only honorable way to live. He acknowledges that some human beings have been created by God to follow a less common, but equally legitimate path. There are some who have been eunuchs from birth made that way by God.

Whoever you are, whatever you do, if you live, work or play in this Century world, you experience discrimination of some sort.

Each one of us has a personal story of dealing with the painful feeling aroused by exclusion or rejection.
If each of us were to begin listening carefully to our neighbors’ stories of rejection, then our attitudes toward our fellow citizens would begin to shift in a positive way.

It’s often quoted, "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

The Church (and individual Christians) certainly aren’t immune from making mistakes — horrible ones, at times. In the past, we’ve misused the Holy Scriptures to defend — and even promote — some indefensible beliefs and actions.

There was a time when most Christians believed slavery was the will of God. There was a time when most Christians believed women should not be allowed to vote. There was a time when most Christians believed that interracial marriage was wrong. Each position was elaborately supported with biblical arguments — and each position, we can now clearly see, was dead wrong.

We now understand that cultural prejudice was at work shaping the way these Christians read the Bible. It is essential, for those of us who seek to know and follow the will of God in all we do, that we learn about the errors in our history so that we never those mistakes again. Precious lives are at stake, and we simply can’t afford to be so wrong again.

If we know how these mistakes were made in the past, we have a better chance of recognizing and avoiding the same errors today. Consider these examples from the past:

Christians who used the Bible to support the American system of slavery

Proponents of slavery used three distinct appeals: nature, scripture, and social order. They argued that the nature of African people (often seen as the "curse of Ham") relegated them to servitude.

Using the same reasons as those who advocated for slavery (nature, scripture, and social order) some Christians have resisted every attempt to improve the standing of women in society, most notably fighting against allowing women to vote.

Nature and selected scripture were invoked to show that a woman’s place was in the home, not engaged as a citizen. Regarding the desire of women to vote, the Council of Congregationalist Ministers of Massachusetts said:

"The appropriate duties and influence of woman are stated in the New Testament…. The power of woman is in her dependence, flowing from the consciousness of the weakness which God has given her for her protection…. When she assumes the place and tone of man as a public reformer… she yields the power which God has given her… and her character becomes unnatural."

Opponents even called into question the character of those who supported equality:

Well I am a proud LESBIAN and I am not against anyone who is Heterosexual, because I was born from it, taught by them and I respect them all.
As long as Herstory or History repeats we will always be OPPRESSED...
God is Love. Love All EQUALLY..

(For a complete discussion of the term “born eunuch” and the connection with homosexuality, see The Early Church Welcomed a Gay Man.) As a reasonably informed person of his time, Jesus would have been aware of this common view of eunuchs.

It’s often quoted, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

They argued that the nature of African people (often seen as the “curse of Ham”) relegated them to servitude.

“The appropriate duties and influence of woman are stated in the New Testament…. The power of woman is in her dependence, flowing from the consciousness of the weakness which God has given her for her protection…. When she assumes the place and tone of man as a public reformer… she yields the power which God has given her… and her character becomes unnatural.”

Opponents even called into question the character of those who supported equality:

Well I am a proud LESBIAN and I am not against anyone who is Heterosexual, because I was born from it, taught by them and I respect them all.
As long as Herstory or History repeats we will always be OPPRESSED…
God is Love. Love All EQUALLY..
